The Mountain Within

The objective of this project is to design and construct an abstract bust that represents our partner’s characteristics, personality, physical traits, and overall essence. The bust will be created using a single planar material, symbolizing our partner’s true self.

To begin the research process, we will conduct an interview to gain deeper insight into our partner’s identity, values, and experiences. The information gathered will inform a conceptual direction that visually translates their essence into an abstract planar form.

Calm Above the Eyes

The partner I was assigned is Dylan Ly. During our interview, the first thing I noticed was his quiet and shy demeanor. He gave off a calm, simple presence. Even before Dylan mentioned his interests, the atmosphere he reminded me of was a quiet forest or natural landscape mountains, trees, and rivers. As our conversation continued, I learned that he feels naturally drawn to nature, particularly mountains.

For my concept, I aim to capture Dylan’s quiet and calm personality by incorporating elements of nature, specifically mountain forms, into the piece. I plan to create a flat, planar bust using clear acrylic or plastic. The surface will be modified to resemble the textures and ridges of a mountain range, subtly infused with aspects of Dylan’s facial features. The idea is similar to a double exposure in photography where two images merge into one but translated into a three-dimensional bust.

If I use acrylic, I will carve into the surface to mimic the layered textures of mountains. If I use plastic, I will heat and shape the material to form organic ridges resembling a mountainside.

The use of transparent material connects conceptually to Dylan’s personality. At first glance, clear material can seem almost invisible or easy to overlook much like someone who is quiet and reserved. However, when observed closely, it reveals depth, texture, and a cool, smooth, calming quality. This duality reflects Dylan’s subtle yet grounded presence.
